Lyman Charley Shepard was born February 16, 1923 at Gerster, Missouri to Bud Frederick Shepard and Surilda Annie (Kramer) Shepard. He passed away Wednesday, February 24, 2010 at Clarinda Regional Health Center, Clarinda, Iowa at the age of 87.
Lyman graduated country school after attending Lone Elm and Lily White, both in Missouri, and Hardy, Pleasant Valley, Frog Valley, and Ligget, all in Iowa. After graduating he farmed for Wingers, Hookhams, and Woods. On February 14, 1945 he was married to Ruth Bell. They lived in Villisca for thirty-two years. Lyman worked for the City of Villisca, the Mental Health Institute retiring in 1988 and he drove the area transit bus for ten years retiring from that job in 1999.
Lyman and Ruth moved to Westridge Quality Care & Rehab in the spring of 2002. They have enjoyed their time visiting with people and Lyman’s daily job was to care for the raising and lower of the flag. Many, many friends and family will miss Lyman and his cheerful attitude.
Lyman was preceded in death by his parents; brother Ferman and his wife Marie; brother-in-law Jim Ryan; and brother Ralph Victor Shepard.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth of Clarinda; children Charles LaVerne Shepard and wife Kay of Bedford, IA and Merrill Lee Shepard and wife Sharon of Clarinda, IA; grandchildren Brenda Kenagy and husband Duane of Clarinda and their children Ashley and Amber, Roger Shepard of Bedford, IA, Jill People and husband Robert of Raeford, NC and their children Jamal and Bianca, Debra Lee and husband Randy of Hadley, MN and daughter Michaela Norm, Brian Shepard of New Market, IA; and Lyman’s half-sister, Mary Ryan of Farragut, IA.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday, March 1, 2010 at Eickemeyer Funeral Chapel with interment at Clarinda Cemetery. Family visitation will be held one hour prior to the service with open visitation Sunday afternoon. Memorials are suggested to the First Christian Church, Clarinda.
