Catherin Olga (Murren) Calhoon was born March 28, 1914, in Valley Township, Page County, Iowa. She is the daughter of Oliver Glee and Anna Marie Dorothea (Schroeder) Murren. Catherin passed away July 14, 2010, at the age of 96 at Westridge Quality Care and Rehab in Clarinda, Iowa.
Catherin was born and raised in the Valley Township area and went to rural school at North Page. She graduated from the Villisca High School in the class of 1932. She received her Normal Training Certificate and with that did some substitute teaching. Catherin married Leonard Jacob Calhoon on January 23, 1934 in Nodaway, Iowa. Together they lived north of Hawleyville in the North Grove Community. In 1945 they moved to Villisca where they resided for a year and then returned to the Hawleyville area. They moved back to the farm in 1963 and stayed there until 1977, when they moved into New Market.
Catherin was a member of the New Market Methodist Church and active with the United Methodist Women. She also was a member of the Hawleyville HEO Club, Neighborhood Club in New Market and Grandma’s Club. Catherin enjoyed sewing, including quilting and crocheting, and painting in her spare time. She was well known for her baking and in 1962 received the Page County Homemaker of the Year award. Catherin was involved with the community helping out with 4-H and volunteering with many community service projects.
Catherin was preceded in death by her parents Oliver and Anna Marie Murren; husband of 62 years Leonard Calhoon; daughter Louise Flatley; sister Roena Reed; and an infant grandson.
Surviving Catherin are her children: Wanda (Bill) Scott of Red Oak, Iowa, Alma (Leland) Shell of Madrid, Iowa, Delores (Gary) Beery of Shambaugh, Iowa, Phyllis (Gary) Davison of Braddyville, Iowa, Sharon Dennis of Council Bluffs, Iowa, David (Della) Calhoon of Clarinda, Iowa, Stephen Calhoon of Greely , Colorado and Joan (Jim) Card of Smithville, Missouri; 24 grandchildren, 41 great grandchildren, 13 great-great grandchildren; sisters Wilma Frodsham of New Market, Iowa, Leona Templeton of Red Oak, Iowa, Ellen Wardlow of Kansas City, Missouri; brothers Oliver Murren of Villisca, Iowa, John Murren of Creston, Iowa and Gene Murren of Erie, Colorado; many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services for Catherin O. (Murren) Calhoon, 96 of New Market, will be held 10:00 a.m. Saturday, July 17, 2010, at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home in Clarinda with burial at the Clarinda Cemetery. Visitation is scheduled from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friday, July 16, at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home.
